In the first quarter of 2026, Brookside INN was owned by Devona Schumann and Frederick Schumann, according to Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). The facility, located in Douglas County, has been in their ownership since April 4, 1985.

Brookside INN operates as a for-profit nursing home.

During this period, the facility received a two-star overall CMS rating, which is lower than the Colorado statewide average of 3.2 for nursing homes. CMS assigns ratings based on vital factors such as health inspection results, staffing figures, and resident care quality.

Data shows Brookside INN cared for an average of 104.4 residents daily in the first quarter of 2026 and offered 126 beds. The facility currently does not operate as a hospital-based home.

Throughout the first quarter of 2026, Brookside INN paid $1,196 in fines and was issued one penalty.

There were six for-profit nursing facilities across Douglas County, Colorado, during this time.

Estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau show the nation’s older population is on the rise while younger groups dwindle. Between 2020 and 2024, Americans 65 or older grew by 13%, while those under 18 declined by 1.7%. The older adult population in the U.S. has surged from 4.9 million in 1920 to more than 61 million in 2024.

Research published in 2021 indicates nearly half of older adults—about 28 million people—are likely to need long-term services and support. The study also estimates more than a third of this group could eventually require nursing home services.

“Living a long life is something that many of us want and could get,” said Jesse Slome, executive director of the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance, an insurance education group. “But when we live a long life, the chances of us needing long-term care increase exponentially. But when you need that type of care, there are limited options.”
