The Colorado Buffaloes men’s and women’s track and field teams concluded their third home indoor meet of the season on Feb. 7, with several athletes setting school records and achieving top national rankings at the Ford Practice Facility.
The event was notable for Ty Cook’s new school record in the men’s 800 meters, clocking a time of 1:48.38, and Justine Kipkoech moving into fifth place nationally in the mile with an adjusted time of 3:53.05. These performances highlighted what head coach Sean Carlson described as a strong showing for the team.
“The men had a good day, a really, really good day,” Sean Carlson said. “Ty just ran the school record in the 800. Justine had a 3:53 in the mile and sits fifth in the NCAA right now. Danny (Tragarz) ran a 46, that’s awesome, an awesome day for him. Ernest (Campbell) ran a great rust-buster for him and great opener, really close to his PR. Antonio (Votour) went sub-8, that’s really good in the hurdles. The men had a really good day.”
In addition to Cook and Kipkoech’s achievements, Danny Tragarz moved into second place in CU history for the men’s 400 meters with a personal best of 46.69 seconds. Antonio Votour improved his season best to 7.94 seconds in the men’s 60m hurdles finals, tying for third all-time at CU, while newcomer Ernest Campbell tied for ninth all-time at CU in the men’s 60 meters with a final time of 6.76 seconds.
Carlson said these results position the team well ahead of upcoming relay events: “This sets us up really, really well going into the DMR weekend,” he said. “What Isaiah (Givens) has run in the mile, what Justine is running in the mile. Ty ran the school record in the 800 and Danny had a really good quarter. We should be able to put together a really good DMR in a couple weeks.”
Looking ahead, select Buffaloes athletes will compete at Boston’s David Hemery Valentine Invitational on Feb. 13-14 before returning home for their final indoor meet—the Colorado Last Chance—on Feb. 20 at Ford Practice Facility.
