The University of Colorado men’s golf team is tied for fifth place after the second round of the 19th annual San Diego R.E. Lamkin Invitational, according to a March 9 update from Chula Vista, California.
The tournament is significant as it features strong competition and provides an opportunity for teams to improve their national rankings. The Buffaloes’ performance keeps them within reach of the leaders heading into the final round.
San Diego leads the event with a total score of 557, followed by Long Beach State at 563 and San Diego State at 565. Colorado and Brigham Young are both at 569, rounding out the top five teams. The Buffaloes improved their standing with a strong second-round score of six-under-par 282 after starting in eighth place following the first round.
First-year graduate transfer Jackson Rivera is tied for seventh individually with a four-under-par total over two rounds. Junior Brandon Knight sits tied for eighteenth after rebounding from an early double bogey to finish three under par. Senior Hunter Swanson and sophomore Parker Paxton are both tied for twenty-fourth, each recording even-par scores in both rounds. Junior Ty Holbrook is tied for forty-first after finishing two over par across his rounds.
Head coach Roy Edwards said, “We had a really nice second round. Jackson and Brandon played well and Parker and Hunter really hung in there. Ty did as well. The goal of the team today was to be patient all day, and we were very impressed by that. It’s not the hardest golf course on the surface, but it’s the kind that most definitely demands your attention or else it is very easy to make a bogey. Everyone is looking forward to tomorrow.” Alejandro De Castro from Long Beach State leads individually with an eleven-under-par total.
The final round will begin Tuesday morning, with Colorado paired alongside BYU, UC San Diego, and UC Davis.
