Colorado junior Drew Costelow set a new program record in the 800 meters during the final day of the John Thomas Terrier Classic at Boston University, according to a Jan. 31 announcement from the team.
Costelow ran his first 800-meter race of the season and finished with a time of 1:48.50, surpassing the previous Colorado record of 1:49.30 that was set by Rick Musgrave in 1976. Head coach Sean Carlson said, “We had a few top 10 all-time CU marks today, and that is always a good sign. Drew running a school record in his first 800 of the season is a great start for him and coach (Dalton) Hengst.”
Junior transfer Ty Cook made his debut for Colorado in the same event, finishing with a time of 1:50.49, which places him seventh on the program’s all-time list. In addition to strong performances in the 800 meters, three Buffaloes competed in the men’s 5000 meters. Sophomore Jake Liebert led this group with a personal best time of 13:32.99, placing second on Colorado’s top-10 list for that event. James Overberg finished two spots behind Liebert with a time of 13:36.65, while Dean Casey completed the race in 13:51.61.
Carlson also commented on Liebert’s performance: “Jake Liebert continues to take the steps necessary to become one of our top guys and leaders of the future as a redshirt-freshman, running 13:32.” He added, “Some of our men left wanting more, and that’s a good thing because our standard is continuing to grow.”
Other notable results included Isaiah Givens finishing as the second collegiate runner in the men’s 3000-meter invite with a time of 7:58.25 and Tanner Newkirk leading Colorado runners in the open division with a time of 7:52.57.
The Buffaloes will return home next week to host the Colorado Classic at Boulder’s Ford Practice Facility on Feb. 6-7.
