The Colorado Buffaloes women’s tennis team is set to begin its Big 12 conference schedule after a successful weekend. The team will travel to face Iowa State on Friday and Kansas on Sunday.
Last weekend, the Buffaloes secured three wins against UNLV, Gonzaga, and Utah Tech, with a combined score of 17-4. Head coach Anthony Pham commented on the team’s strengths: “One of our biggest strengths this year is our depth. We feel really confident with whoever we put in the lineup.”
As they prepare for conference play, Pham noted the level of competition in the Big 12. “The Big 12 is really competitive,” he said. “We know every team is good, whether they’re ranked or not, and Iowa State and Kansas are both very good teams.”
Iowa State has started its season with a 2-4 record, earning consecutive victories over St. Thomas and UNLV. Historically, Colorado leads their series against Iowa State 29-6. Last season, the teams met twice; Colorado lost 4-3 during regular season play but defeated Iowa State 4-2 in the first round of the Big 12 Championship.
On Sunday, Colorado will face Kansas for the 47th time in series history. Kansas currently holds a 28-18 advantage in their matchups and recently won their last meeting with Colorado by a score of 4-2 in March. The Buffaloes aim to end a two-match losing streak against Kansas; their last win came at home in 2015.
Pham expressed optimism about his team’s performance heading into these matches: “We’re in a good place. The team is competing really well and fighting like crazy, and that’s something we want to continue going into this weekend.”
Friday’s match at Iowa State Tennis Facility starts at 3 p.m. Mountain Time, while Sunday’s contest at Jayhawk Tennis Center begins at 1 p.m.
