The Colorado Buffaloes women’s tennis team will travel south for another weekend of conference matches, following a split performance last week that included an upset victory. The announcement was made on March 11.
The upcoming matches are significant as the Buffaloes look to build momentum after defeating No. 28 Oklahoma State and moving up to No. 51 in the rankings, their highest position since 2024. The team aims to continue improving against strong conference opponents.
Last week, Colorado lost a close match to Kansas State but rebounded with a win over Oklahoma State. Head coach Anthony Pham said, “It was a nice win for us last weekend,” adding, “And for us we just want to keep building. Every match we play from here on out will be against a good team in conference.” Aya El Sayed earned Big 12 Player of the Week honors after upsetting No. 53 Olivia Lincer in straight sets.
The Buffaloes are set to face No. 20 University of Central Florida (UCF) on Friday at the USTA National Campus and then travel to Texas for a Sunday match against No. 36 University of Houston at the Barbara Wallace Winston Tennis Facility. Colorado has played UCF only once before, losing 4-0 last year at home. UCF currently holds a 10-2 overall record and is ranked No. 80 in doubles with Olivia Bergler and Lauren Seye.
Houston presents another challenge for Colorado, as the Cougars have improved from last season’s record and now stand at 11-2 overall with two conference wins. Their doubles duo Sophie Schouten and Chems Doha Zeghlouli are ranked No. 89 nationally.
Pham commented on the upcoming matches: “Central Florida is always a strong program which will be a challenge for us,” he said, also noting that playing Houston away will bring different conditions than those at home. He concluded, “This will be a great opportunity for us, I know the team is excited to get on the road and play two good teams.”
