The Colorado Buffaloes women’s tennis team secured a 4-2 victory over No. 28 Oklahoma State on Sunday at the Meadows Tennis Club, delivering the Cowgirls their first conference defeat of the season.
With this result, Colorado’s record stands at 10-4 overall and 2-2 in Big 12 play. Oklahoma State falls to 6-4 overall and 3-1 in conference matches. This win marks Colorado’s highest-ranked opponent defeated since overcoming No. 16 Washington at home in 2023.
“Thank you to Michael Tasker and his crew for their help this morning, they are the reason these courts are ready to play,” said head coach Anthony Pham. “Really proud of the way our team competed. Obviously coming back from a tough loss this Friday, it shows we’re a resilient group.”
Although Colorado lost the doubles point early in the match, four singles victories gave them the edge for an upset win. Key performances came from Aya El Sayed and Pia Rebec, who each notched wins against ranked opponents at their respective singles positions.
El Sayed earned her first ranked win of the season and her 55th career singles victory by defeating No. 53 Olivia Lincer. Rebec recorded her first ranked upset this season against No. 22 Rose Marie Nijkamp, bringing her total singles victories for the season to 18 and for her career to 41.
Rixt van der Werff contributed with a straight-set win at No. 2 singles over Anastasiya Komar, marking her second Big 12 singles victory this year and tenth overall this season. Yukiko Ikedo added another point through a forfeit at No. 6 singles.
Pham commented on his team’s effort: “It speaks to the character of the team,” he said, “And I am really proud of the way they went out and competed.”
The Buffs have now registered more wins so far in the current dual season than their entire previous season (9-14). The program also surpassed 100 career dual victories in singles as a team and has accumulated over 40 such wins during this campaign.
Colorado is scheduled to travel next week for matches against UCF on Friday and Houston on Sunday.
