The Colorado Buffaloes women’s lacrosse team will close out its non-conference season against the University of Connecticut at Kittredge Field on Wednesday, following an 18-3 victory over Stetson that improved their record to 5-2 and kept them undefeated at home. The March 16 announcement comes as the Buffaloes prepare for their first-ever meeting with UConn.
The upcoming game is significant as it marks the end of non-conference play before Colorado enters Big 12 competition. The Buffaloes’ recent performance, including a season-high in goals and their largest margin of victory since last year, has set a positive tone for the team.
Head coach Ann Elliott Whidden said after Sunday’s win, “I think to come out and dictate the pace of play was important on our end. I think our offense did a good job of executing for the most part. Again, there are areas we could do better. We still want to do better in transition, but just in terms of taking control of the pace of play, that’s really big for us as we look to our next games down this stretch.”
Whidden also commented on preparations for UConn: “I think UConn is a really good team and is going to present us a challenge in a lot of different ways. I think for us, the draws are huge. We have to find a way to have more possession and be clean in transition. I know we had the first one [clear attempt] we turned over in the game. But it’s just about controlling the things we can control to give ourselves the most opportunities we can have.”
Colorado’s defense remains strong, ranking third nationally by holding opponents to an average of 6.43 goals per game and maintaining a scoring margin that places them sixteenth in the country at 5.00 through seven games this season.
Senior Molly Reed reflected on Sunday’s win: “Our whole team works so hard in and out of practice every day. The fact that everyone was able to get those opportunities today was just exciting to see.” All available players participated against Stetson, allowing key contributors additional rest ahead of Wednesday’s matchup.
UConn arrives with a 3-4 record and has won two out of its last three games, led by sophomore attacker Megan O’Brien with 16 goals and 28 points.
