No. 15 Colorado is set to play No. 22 Army in women’s lacrosse on Sunday, following a recent loss to No. 18 Stony Brook. The quick turnaround presents an early test for the Buffaloes, who will travel to West Point for the matchup.
Head coach Ann Elliott Whidden commented on the upcoming opponent: “You know, Army’s a great team. They have some similarities on the offensive end to a little bit of what we saw today. They have a couple of the top players in the country on that offensive side.”
Army features preseason Nike Lacrosse Media All-Americans Brigid Duffy and Allison Reilly. Duffy holds single-season and career records at Army for goals, groundballs, and caused turnovers. Reilly recorded 50 goals and 35 assists last season, setting a program record with 102 points.
Colorado is focusing on improving its own play after struggling with turnovers and penalties against Stony Brook. “For us, our focus has always kind of been on ourselves and what we do and how we can continue to improve and get better,” Whidden said.
She added, “We’ve got to take some positives from today, we’ve got to learn from today. Then we’ve got to get back focused on ourselves and ready to just go out there and compete for an actual 60 minutes.”
Whidden sees the rapid return to competition as beneficial: “This is an awesome opportunity. Sometimes when things don’t go your way, you have to wait a little bit for your next challenge. Well, we don’t have to wait that long.”
Despite their first loss of the season, Colorado (3-1) had strong moments against Stony Brook. Goalkeeper Elena Oh matched her career-high with 12 saves and remains among the NCAA leaders with a .536 save percentage and a 6.75 goals-against average.
Army (3-1) enters Sunday’s game after defeating Florida State 13-7 last week; their only loss this season was against No. 2 Northwestern.
The game is scheduled for a 10 a.m. MT start time and will be streamed live on ESPN+. Tickets are available at CUBuffs.com/WlaxTix.
