The Colorado track and field team will compete at the 2026 Big 12 Indoor Track & Field Championship in Lubbock, Texas, on Feb. 27 and Feb. 28. The event will be hosted by the Texas Tech Raiders at the Sports Performance Center.
This championship is significant for Colorado as several returning athletes are expected to deliver strong performances in distance events and relays. Last year, Dean Casey finished sixth in the men’s 5000 meters, Kole Mathison placed eighth in the men’s 3000 meters, and both men’s and women’s distance medley relay teams secured third place finishes. Abbey Nechanicky led the women with a sixth-place finish in the women’s 5000 meters.
The men’s mile is anticipated to be a highlight this weekend, with Isaiah Givens holding the top spot on the NCAA mile leaderboard for over a month after running a time of 3:51.73 at the Potts Invitational. He will be joined by Justine Kipkoech (No. 12), Kole Mathison (No. 12), and TJ Hansen (No. 29) in what promises to be a competitive race.
Recent performances have added momentum for Colorado heading into this meet. At their last outing during the Colorado Last Chance meet, Avery Pearson broke the school record in the women’s 800 meters with an altitude-adjusted time of 1:59.98, becoming the first woman from Colorado to break two minutes at altitude and ranking seventh nationally this season. The men’s distance medley relay team also set a new program record with a time of 9:19.00, currently placing them twelfth nationally—right at the cut-off for qualification to the NCAA Division I Indoor Championships.
Other notable results included Ernest Campbell winning the men’s 60-meter dash and Kole Mathison taking first place in the mile, while freshman Linda Weigang finished second in her event with a personal best.
With these achievements, Colorado enters this year’s Big 12 Championships aiming to build on its recent successes.
