The University of Colorado track and field team began its 2025-26 indoor season with strong performances at two meets: the Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener in Boston and the Mines Alumni Classic in Golden.
In Boston, Colorado’s distance runners competed against fields that included NCAA champions, All-Americans, and professional athletes. Dominic Serem ran 7:45.61 in the men’s 3000 meters, placing him sixth on Colorado’s all-time list. Isaiah Givens finished with a time of 7:53.07 in the same event.
James Overberg broke the school record in the men’s 5000 meters with a time of 13:31.63, surpassing Joe Klecker’s previous mark from February 2020. Overberg executed a patient race strategy to achieve one of the nation’s top early-season times.
In women’s events, Jessie Secor opened her season by running 9:06.77 in the Invitational 3000 meters. Freshman Abbey Nechanicky posted a personal best of 15:57.80 in the women’s 5000 meters, making her tenth on Colorado’s all-time list.
At the Mines Alumni Classic in Golden, Antonio Votour ran an 8.01 in his first race as a Buff during the men’s 60-meter hurdles final after qualifying with an 8.02 in prelims; this debut earned him a spot on CU’s all-time list for hurdlers. Teegan Malcom followed with an 8.38 finish after an earlier run of 8.42.
Lucas Williams reached sixth place on Colorado’s all-time list for men’s weight throw by recording an effort of 18.73 meters (61’5½”) on his last attempt of the day.
On the women’s side at Golden, Amanda Opp started her season with a final-round throw of 16.48 meters (54’1″) in weight throw competition while sophomore Riley Ward cleared 1.75 meters (5’8¾”) in high jump—just shy of her collegiate best.
Colorado will resume competition as a full team at home during the Potts Invitational scheduled for January 16-17 at Ford Practice Facilities.
