The Colorado women’s basketball team secured a 79-65 victory over Oklahoma State at the CU Events Center on Sunday, Jan. 25. With this win, the Buffaloes improved their record to 13-7 overall and 4-4 in Big 12 play, while Oklahoma State fell to 16-5 and 5-3 in conference.
Colorado established an early lead, going up by as many as eight points in the first quarter and maintaining a double-digit advantage at halftime. Despite pressure from Oklahoma State in the second half, including full-court defense and aggressive rebounding, Colorado held onto its lead for a final margin of 14 points.
“I’m really proud of our team,” head coach JR Payne said. “Today we did some things during this game that we worked on all week, like some execution of certain things, offensively, defensively, before the game started. After shoot-around, we said, ‘The tougher team wins today.’ These are two really good teams. We do things well, they do things well, but whoever’s tougher is going to win this ball game. We just knew that it was going to come down to that. I thought, with the exception of just that we gave them too many offensive rebounds. I thought we did such a good job of guarding, of executing, going against [the] press. We haven’t seen that much this year. So I’m really proud of our squad today and excited to get the win.”
The Buffaloes achieved a season-high field-goal percentage of 57%. They outperformed Oklahoma State in several categories: points in the paint (42-36), bench points (29-9), assists (18-13), fast-break points (18-5), and blocks (3-2). The Buffs also led slightly in rebounds (36-34).
Prior to tip-off and at halftime, former Colorado women’s basketball head coach Ceal Barry was honored with the dedication of Ceal Barry Plaza.
Senior forward Jade Masogayo matched her career-high with 22 points along with five rebounds. Junior guard Desiree Wooten set a career high with nine rebounds and added 15 points and four assists. Junior guard Zyanna Walker contributed 13 points while freshman forward Logyn Greer had nine points and nine rebounds.
Other notable performances included senior forward Anaëlle Dutat’s eight points and seven rebounds; fifth-year center JoJo Nworie’s four points; junior guard Maeve McErlane’s four points; sophomore forward Tabitha Betson’s three points; and freshman guard Erianna Gooden’s two steals.
For Oklahoma State, Achol Akot led with 22 points and nine rebounds.
With this result, Colorado now holds a narrow edge over Oklahoma State all-time at 29 wins to 28 losses between the programs. In Big 12 play overall, Colorado moves to an all-time record of 113 wins against 153 losses.
