Douglas County law enforcement officials are increasing patrols during the New Year holiday period to target impaired drivers. Sheriff Darren Weekly and District Attorney George Brauchler issued a warning to residents and visitors about the risks and consequences of driving under the influence.

Sheriff Weekly stated, “Impaired driving will not be tolerated in Douglas County. Our Traffic Unit and Patrol Deputies are leading the state in holding offenders accountable. If someone refuses a chemical test, we will seek a warrant and go the extra mile to get the evidence needed to keep impaired drivers off our streets. Thanks to the 23rd Judicial District Attorney’s Office, offenders face real consequences. No excuses. No exceptions. We will keep our roads safe.”

District Attorney Brauchler added, “If you choose to drive while impaired in Douglas County, expect to be found and prosecuted severely. We take DUI offenses seriously and will hold offenders accountable. We also have plenty of room in our jail.”

Since January 2025, when the 23rd Judicial District was established, authorities have apprehended and prosecuted 681 drunk drivers with a conviction rate of 94 percent that includes jail time for offenders. Second-time DUI convictions result in mandatory jail sentences and significant fines.

Brauchler emphasized, “Don’t expect a slap on the wrist here. We take protecting our citizens very seriously. The message is, enjoy the holiday season, but if alcohol is part of your plans, make a safe choice and don’t get behind the wheel.”
