A Douglas County Sheriff’s deputy was injured Monday night following a pursuit of an armed carjacking suspect. The incident began after the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office alerted Douglas County deputies to be on the lookout for a suspect involved in an armed carjacking.

Deputies located the vehicle in Highlands Ranch and pursued it until it stopped near County Line Road and Santa Fe Drive. During the pursuit, the suspect rammed into a deputy’s vehicle, resulting in injuries to the deputy. The suspect then fired at law enforcement officers, prompting one deputy to return fire.

The driver was injured during the exchange and taken to a local hospital for treatment. A passenger with outstanding warrants was also taken into custody. The injured deputy was transported to the hospital and is expected to recover.

Douglas County Sheriff Darren M. Weekly stated, “Our deputies were on the frontline protecting the Douglas County Community and this entire area as a whole. They were working hard to identify the suspect vehicle, and they were able to locate that vehicle. Of course, once the pursuit ensued, they did everything they could to resolve that quickly without anyone getting injured. It was the suspect who made the determination to drive like he did, drive over to this area and attempt to kill two of our deputies. The suspect began firing from the inside of his vehicle, trying to kill our deputies, so again were very fortunate that it wasn’t more serious than it was.”

The Littleton Police Department is leading an active investigation into this incident. Authorities have said additional information will be released when available.
