The Board of Elbert County Commissioners has expressed concern over recent incidents involving the vandalism of political signs in the county. In a statement released on September 22, 2025, the board said such actions do not reflect the values held by residents of Elbert County.
“We are alarmed by the recent vandalism of political signage in Elbert County. These criminal acts are inconsistent with our county’s values, especially now when we are working to unite on common issues such as managed growth, a thriving economy, safe roads, and our rural identity. We recognize that political disagreements – often triggered by hostile, online debate – are part of the political process, and that as Americans we have the First Amendment right to express our views. This right does not, however, include the right to vandalize political signs,” stated the Board.
The commissioners highlighted that while public discourse and differing opinions are an expected part of local democracy, damaging property crosses a legal line. The board emphasized ongoing efforts to address community priorities like economic development and infrastructure while maintaining respect for all residents’ rights.
