Elbert County confirms fatal self-inflicted shooting at administration building

At approximately 9:25 a.m. on October 29, 2025, a shooting took place at the Elbert County Administration Building located at 215 Comanche Street in Kiowa. According to the Elbert County Sheriff’s Office, one individual died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The Board of Elbert County Commissioners released a statement regarding the incident: “We understand that incidents such as this are distressing, and we are committed to providing support for those in our organization impacted by this tragedy. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family who lost their loved one today.”

Officials confirmed there is no ongoing threat to the community and all county employees have been accounted for and are safe.

The Board also encouraged anyone experiencing emotional distress to seek assistance through available confidential resources, including AgriStress Helpline (call or text: 833-897-2474) for agricultural communities and Colorado Crisis Services (dial or chat 988 or visit ColoradoCrisisServices.org) for emotional support.
