A recent community survey in Elbert County drew participation from 925 individuals, marking the highest response rate for a countywide survey in the county’s history. Of those who took part, 94% were residents of Elbert County.

The survey, conducted between July 22 and September 5, 2025, was managed by Kimley Horn, a prominent planning and engineering firm. The survey aimed to gather public input as part of the ongoing update to the County’s Comprehensive Plan.

Survey results will be presented at an open house scheduled for tonight from 6-8 p.m. at the Agriculture Building on the Elbert County Fairgrounds in Kiowa. Attendees are invited to review findings and provide feedback.

Key issues raised in open-ended responses included concerns about growth and development. When asked to describe their ideal vision for Elbert County’s future in one word, most respondents used “rural.”

Among the main findings:

– 98% agreed that “Elbert County has a history and heritage worth preserving and protecting.”
– 97% agreed that “Living in a County that values a rural lifestyle is important to me.”
– 95% agreed that “Elbert County is a safe place.”
– 91% identified “visual appeal (scenic views and natural beauty)” as the county’s top strength.
– 90% said “Elbert County is a good place to raise a family.”
– Another 90% supported preserving open space, natural areas, and creating trails for recreation.

Residents were invited to participate through various channels including the Comprehensive Plan website, social media platforms like Facebook and Nextdoor, local newspapers such as Prairie Times and Elbert County News, TV coverage on 7News, events like the Elbert County Fair and Simla Days, as well as printed copies available at libraries and county facilities.

Complete results of the survey can be found on the Elbert County Comprehensive Plan website.
