The Elbert County Sheriff’s Office has reported receiving calls from residents about a scam involving individuals posing as Sheriff’s Office employees. The callers claim there is a warrant for the recipient’s arrest due to either missing a court appearance or failing to attend jury duty, and then request payment to avoid jail.

The Sheriff’s Office emphasized that these communications are fraudulent. “This is terrifying and it is FRAUD!!!” the statement read. Officials clarified, “This is NOT coming from the Elbert County Sheriff’s Office.”

According to the Sheriff’s Office, legitimate communication regarding jury duty will only be sent through U.S. Mail. “No Elbert County official will ever contact you by phone, email, or text about jury duty. Official jury duty communication will come by U.S. Mail only,” the office stated.

Residents who receive such calls, texts, or emails are advised not to respond, click any links, or send money. The office warned: “This is a scam!”
