As National Preparedness Month is recognized across the country this September, Elbert County’s Office of Emergency Management is encouraging residents to take proactive steps to safeguard their families and property in case of emergencies. The county is promoting the “Take Control in 1, 2, 3” initiative, which aims to make emergency planning more manageable for community members.

Jacob Love, Director of Emergency Management for Elbert County, emphasized the importance of readiness. “Emergencies and disasters can strike at any time, often with little to no warning. National Preparedness Month serves as a crucial reminder that preparedness is not a one-time event, but an ongoing process,” said Love. He added, “We believe that a well-prepared community is a resilient community. We can enhance our ability to withstand and recover from any challenge.”

The “Take Control in 1, 2, 3” campaign encourages residents to assess their needs, prepare detailed plans for emergencies—including what actions to take and what items to bring—and engage support networks such as neighbors or family who can assist during crises.

Additional recommendations from the county include monitoring local weather conditions closely and assembling an emergency kit with at least three days’ worth of non-perishable food, water, medications, flashlights, first-aid supplies and pet provisions. Residents are also advised not to overlook creating an emergency car kit.

Elbert County urges all residents to sign up for CodeRED alerts through its official website (elbertcounty-co.gov) so they can receive real-time updates from local authorities during emergencies.
