U.S. Census Bureau estimates indicate the nation’s population aged 65 and older continues to rise, while the under-18 population declines. Between 2020 and 2024, Americans age 65 and older increased by 13%, compared with a 1.7% decrease among those under age 18. Historic census data demonstrates growth in the nation’s older adult population, rising from 4.9 million in 1920 to upward of 61 million in 2024.

A 2021 study indicated that about half of Americans in this age group, or around 28 million, could need long-term services and supports. The research also estimated that more than a third of these individuals may eventually require nursing home care.

“Living a long life is something that many of us want and could get,” said Jesse Slome, executive director of the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance, an insurance education group. “But when we live a long life, the chances of us needing long-term care increase exponentially. But when you need that type of care, there are limited options.”
