A Cold Weather Advisory has been issued by the National Weather Service for parts of Elbert County located above 6,000 feet in elevation. The advisory is in effect from 3 a.m. on Friday, January 23, through 9 a.m. on Sunday, January 25.
The National Weather Service warns that wind combined with cold temperatures can be more hazardous than cold alone. “Wind chill will cause evening temperatures to drop below zero or colder,” according to the advisory.
Residents are advised to take precautions if they need to be outdoors during this period. “If you must be outside, layer up! Skin exposed to extreme cold can develop dangerous frostbite in as little as 10-30 minutes,” the statement reads.
Livestock owners are also urged to take steps to protect their animals: “Extra feed/warm water! Ensure shelter. Break ice. Use straw bedding for vulnerable animals.”
Homeowners should prepare their properties against freezing conditions: “To prevent water pipes from freezing, wrap or drain or allow pipes to drip slowly.”
The advisory includes guidance on heater safety as well. “If using a space heater, turn it off before leaving a room and place it at least three feet away from any flammable items.” It also notes that propane heaters should not be used indoors due to safety risks: “While propane heaters can be effective for outdoor use, they are not recommended for indoor use due to the danger of carbon monoxide poisoning.”
