Sophomore Lera Alexin has been recognized for her performance with the Colorado Buffaloes women’s tennis team, according to a March 18 announcement. In just two years, Alexin has achieved notable records and awards since joining the team in 2024.

Alexin began her college career as a freshman by securing 31 total wins, including 14 in singles and 17 in doubles, which was the third-highest total on the team. She quickly established herself in starting positions at No. 5 and No. 6 this season, earning seven dual victories. Her efforts led to her being named ITA Rookie of the Year, making her only the second Buffalo to receive this honor since 2018.

Reflecting on her progress into her sophomore year, Alexin said, “The biggest difference this year is not feeling like I’m doing everything for the first time. I know what to expect during the season and am better prepared to handle the challenges that come with the spring. It takes a lot of pressure off not having to constantly be adjusting to a new environment, and I’ve felt more confident on the court because of that.” This season she has already surpassed last year’s singles victories with a record of 15-8 overall and 10-3 in dual competition.

Alexin credits her improvement to experience and support from teammates and coaches: “My experience from last year and the support from the team have helped me find a better routine this season,” she said. “My teammates’ success and the energy they bring every time help build my confidence as well. The coaches have really helped develop my game, and they never put pressure on us to win and always bring positive energy during the matches.” Head coach Anthony Pham praised Alexin’s work ethic: “She works so hard on the court,” Pham said. “If you have ten of her, you’re thrilled. She is very team-first, but also pushes herself both on the court and in the classroom. She is a great teammate, everyone loves her, and we’re so happy she’s a Buff.”

This season Alexin has partnered with senior Rixt van der Werff in doubles play; together they started their dual campaign with an eight-match win streak and hold an overall record of 19-5. The pair also reached the semifinals at the ITA Regional Championship after winning four consecutive matches during fall competition.

Looking ahead, Alexin said: “My goal for the rest of the year is to keep developing my game and building my confidence so that I can contribute as much as I can to the team’s success. I hope that Rixt and I can continue finding our rhythm in doubles and build on the success that we’ve had.” The Colorado Buffaloes will continue their season at home against BYU and Utah this weekend.
