WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Rep. Diana DeGette (D-CO), co-chair of the House Pro-Choice Caucus, issued the following statement in response to the Supreme Court’s decision on the abortion pill, mifepristone:

“Mifepristone has been approved for use in this country for more than 20 years. It has been used by more than 5 million Americans and has proven to be safer than some of the most common medications - including Tylenol, penicillin and even Viagra.

“By staying the lower court's decision, the Supreme Court has maintained the status quo and averted a disaster that not only would have put women's health at risk, but also threatened to upend our nation's entire drug-approval process going forward.

“While this is a welcome, albeit temporary, reprieve from the initial threat to women's ability to access abortion medication, our fight to fully protect women's right to reproductive care is far from over. Republicans have shown, over and over, that they will not stop until they have banned abortion care nationwide.  As the 5th Circuit now prepares to consider this case, I’m hopeful any future decisions regarding Americans’ ability to access this important medication are based solely on science, not politics.“
